Dipillo Wins Gold Chalice on CTCWeb

DEDHAM, MA – March 14, 2006 – Dr. Patricia Dipillo is the winner of AbleMedia’s annual Gold Chalice Award for her work The Gods and Heroes of the Odyssey, available on the AbleOne Education Network’s Classics Technology Center on the Web (CTCWeb, www.ableone.org/ctcweb). Dipillo is a Latin teacher at Marlborough High School in Massachusetts. “Pat’s elegant and masterful work sets the gold standard, because it is both educational and entertaining,” said Wendy E. Owens, CTCWeb Editor-in-Chief. “Her continued contributions to CTCWeb are deeply appreciated by millions of educators and students in the Classics community and beyond who benefit from her efforts via AbleOne.”

“I am so pleased to again be able to contribute to the work of my fellow Classicists all over the world. To have student contributions in this endeavor brings me even greater satisfaction. I am so proud that they will be honored in this way. They will be thrilled to know that their work has been recognized and appreciated,” Dipillo said. “Thank You, CTCWeb, for the opportunities and wonderful service you provide for Classics education.”

In The Gods and Heroes of the Odyssey, Dipillo shares a dazzling array of classroom materials that illuminate the Homeric epic. She highlights enjoyable, creative activities for students that bring the Homeric world alive. Whether it is creating clay slabs of mythological creatures, brainstorming about mythological words, or generating Odyssey-related jokes, students are encouraged to think critically and creatively about the ancient text. For teachers looking to supplement their teaching of the Odyssey, Dipillo’s Gods and Heroes of the Odyssey is a eminently reliable and in-depth resource. Vivid artwork, created by both teachers and students, stand as further examples of the creative productions encouraged through Dipillo’s materials.

“I am so thankful to Wendy Owens and my colleagues at AbleOne for their support, outstanding work, and contributions to the Classics community. Their website is a treasure chest full of exemplary work by Classicists and an excellent resource for teachers and students,” Dipillo said. “I was asked on the spot in Nashville in November at American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages to make a presentation on this curriculum unit at Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages in New York City in April as an example of the recognition I have received based on your generosity.”

Each week AbleOne’s sponsor, AbleMedia, salutes contributors for outstanding submissions to the AbleOne Consortium (http://ablemedia.com/ctcweb/consortium/), the AbleOne Showcase (http://ablemedia.com/ctcweb/showcase/), and AbleOne Netshots™ (http://ablemedia.com/ctcweb/netshots.html). Each receives the Bronze Chalice award. AbleMedia awards Silver Chalices for the outstanding submissions of the month. At the end of each year, AbleMedia awards Gold Chalices for the outstanding submissions of the year.
